Darien, Georgia Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

The small town of Darien was incorporated in 1818. Situated at the mouth of he Altamaha River, Darien enjoyed importance as a seaport- exporting rice, cotton and lumber. During the Civil War, much of the city was burned down, but was eventually reconstructed.

This small, quaint southern town offers visitors a lovely Riverfront Park. The park includes a promenade and boardwalk. This is a great place to sit, unwind, and watch the local shrimp boats pass, or hop on the bike trail to Fort King George.

Huge antebellum plantations that grew rice and cotton once existed in Darien. Today, one such prominent plantation remains and is open to the public. The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site is a gorgeous plantation that represents the history and culture of Georgia's rice coast. A museum, film, and tour of the home help visitors grasp the complexity of plantation life. The plantation is also a Colonial Coast Birding Trail site, and as such, offers a well-maintained nature trail.

The adventure minded will use Darien as a jumping point to explore the surrounding region. Sapelo Island is a great start. Only a passenger ferry provides access to the island- but it's well worth the trip. The island's Visitor's Center is located at the ferry dock, and serves as the best place to learn about coastal ecosystems. Visitors can also enjoy interpretive exhibits, and explore nature trails. The best thing to do here is simply take in the natural beauty.

Anther adventure opportunity waits at the Altamaha River. The largest river system east of the Mississippi, is home to over 100 species of rare or endangered plants and animals. The region is particularly attractive to those who enjoy hiking, kayaking, canoeing, bird watching, and nature photography. Local companies offer a variety of eco-friendly tours.

The Fort King George Historic Site is an essential stop for history lovers. The extensive history of this site is explained through the museum, an excellent film, and, on occasion, living history. The site's unique tabby ruins are quite interesting. Fort King George is also on the Colonial Coastal Birding Trail, and offers a nature trail.

Darien is located about 60 miles south of Savannah, off Interstate 95.
