When it comes to historic sites, Hartford, one of the nation's oldest cities, is no slouch, nor, happily, does it lack for accessible scenic landscapes or cultural pursuits.
Fine art from American talents forms the core of the New Britain Museum of American Art's permanent collection, which includes 5,000 works in a variety of mediums, from photographs and illustrations to paintings and drawings. In addition to a strong showing by artists from the colonial period, including a number of portraits, find landscapes by Hudson River School notables like Albert Bietstadt and Fitz Hugh Lane, post-Civil War pieces by Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins (and others), as well as a selection of Impressionist works by Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam. Those interested more in modern art won't go away disappointed either - there are a number of pieces exhibited here by well-known names from 20th-century movements, from Pop art to Photo-Realism.
